Clinical and Translational Research Coordinator - VA Portland Health Care System

SUMMARY

This is a limited duration (through 9/30/21), full-time position to be hired through the Portland VA Healthcare System. The position broadly supports multiple ongoing basic research projects under the direction of Dr. Khanh Nguyen. The Nguyen laboratory uses biotechnologies to discover and design new approaches to venous and vascular diseases uses a variety of techniques including molecular biology and novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, the laboratory conducts a number of clinical trials to better understand venous disease and thrombosis.

JOB DUTIES

  • Obtaining medical records
  • Subject screening using electronic medical records systems, recruit and/or interview research subjects
  • Obtaining research consent from human subjects
  • Facilitating the collection of human samples in the outpatient setting and operating room
  • Basic blood and tissue sample handling, processing, storage and logging
  • Contacting patients for research data collection
  • Patient data entry and abstracting patient data from medical records
  • Assisting in the maintenance of regulatory documents
  • Communicating with associates in other departments
  • Monitor clinical trials and take notes on activities
  • Ensure compliance with all clinical trial protocols
  • Data abstraction from electronic medical record
  • Enter clinical research data into appropriate fields
  • Transfer data from paper formats via computer, recorders, or scanners
  • Organize spreadsheets with large numbers
  • Curate data directly from clinical research
  • Track research subjects and schedule appropriate follow-up
  • Maintain adequate records of interviews and research data, safeguarding confidentiality of subjects
  • Generate progress reports on status of data and specimens collected
  • Prepare correspondence, documentation, or presentation materials on findings
  • Correspond with potential research subjects and enrolled research subjects in person, by phone and email
  • Preparation and submission of regulatory documents including IRB, FDA and IACUC

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. However, possible supervisory role to onboard and track volunteers and students in the laboratory.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • College background in biological or related science, or social sciences
  • Willingness to work with and handle rodents
  • Prior basic laboratory work
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Well organized

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • College background in biological or related science
  • At least 1-year of experience as a clinical research coordinator

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate in English
  • Communication by phone, email, text, virtual meetings

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Basic statistical analysis methods (preferred)

COMPUTER SKILLS

  • Ability to use Microsoft applications: word, excel, etc.
  • Ability to use or learn statistical programs such as SPSS
  • Ability to use databases: REDCap
